What is Restorative Justice?
Restorative justice is a way of repairing harm and resolving conflict based upon healing and learning rather than punishment. In this approach, crime is understood not only as breaking the law, but more importantly as a violation of people and relationships and a disruption of the peace in the community. It recognizes that we all make mistakes in our lives, and seeks ways for people to make amends and move forward.
Restorative justice brings together the victim, offender and members of the community in a safe, facilitated circle to consider the circumstances that led to the offense, how people have been affected, and what needs to happen to make things right. They are supported by trained volunteers.
Some common restorative justice processes include:
Face-to-face discussions
Larger group meetings
Peacemaking or healing circles
The CCRJS accepts referrals from the community and workplaces, as well as the criminal justice system. Get in touch to find out more on how we can support you through your healing journey.
